My daughter would have been in a class of 33 if I had not put her in private school. This is shameful - no child can get adequate attention in the first grade in a class that large. Anyone who has ever taught knows that a smaller class size creates a more effective learning environment.

I am a Special Education (career changer) teacher and I travel over 5 hours (one way) to teach in N.C. due to the fact that their licensure process is not as antiquated as S.C. and the fact that the administrators and schools in NC welcome "career changer|||||"|| ||"||b||r||a||n||d|| ||new" teachers, understand the support system they need and give more opportunities for teachers to learn and grow in order to help the students get results and experience achievement. I am extremelty disappointed in the (state where my house is) but a state in which administrators were extremely unsupportive (where I worked), did not support the students or teachers in a positive way and that nothing is being done to improve public education even right up to the Governor himself. I am extremely embarrassed about this (my state) but glad that N.C. does have schools that exist and is at least close by so that I have the opportunity to learn and grow and continue teaching, because I see educating the youth is a pathway to a brighter future for everyone.
    Thank you Teresa Hooker

I fell that if the State wants to provide a quality education for our students ,then they must be willing to limit the budget cuts and realize that every cut trickles down to everyone in the education and espically to each teacher in the classroom. I have been teaching for about 20 years and have a Masters Degree and my paycheck now is about 200 less a check than it was 5 years ago. Those of us still in the classroom do it truly for the children and would like to feel as if we were appreciated. Please help back us to educate our students.

Our funding is so low that the high school does not have working heat and we do not have the funds to repair or replace the old system. Our classrooms and hallways are very cold and I often wear my winter coat during classes in order to take the chill off.
We are getting rid of faculty and staff in order to make an ever decreasing budget. We have not had funding for substitutes this year which requires us to cover for absent teachers or have their student split to other teachers classrooms that may already have 30 students.

Our taxes dollar are not being use fairly, with our children getting a minimally adequate education, and the schools will not do no more than the state say do.
Also is anyone addressing the low #'s of Africian American teachers in the school system. That is part of the problem. Don't say they cannot be found, maybe they are not looking in the right places.

All children in the school system are not taught to think for themselves. It is better to give them the answer. Not good.

This is a must. South Carolina residents are staring in the face of a public school system which appears to be going bankrupt do to a lack of funds. Reduction and cuts come on a daily basis threatening the quality of education across the state. Teachers are losing employment and larger class sizes will be a must for all schools next year. While a few schools prosper, others are left to deal with a $700 million loss. Minimally adequate equates to separate but equal. Both do not work. It is time to put a higher priority on education and the need to supply a standard which supports all school districts.

I have been in education in S.C. for 30+ years. I have seen remarkable improvements in our educational system when our elected officials have supported the necessary changes in expectations for S.C. students. A constitutional change from "minimally adequate" to higher standards will surely help to move our state ahead in order to compete on a national and international level.

Education is important to all. Without giving a quality education to each person there is no reason for education at all. Each of us depends on the other and if there is even one person that can not do then we have all failed. Maybe some day those in charge will realize just how important a quality education really is.

Is it being advertised that SC schools receive funding from sales tax, NOT property tax like in other states? If this were well publicized, people might make more effort to spend their money here. I have mentioned this to people - educated, well informed folks - and they had no idea this was the case.
