June 11, 2008 Chesterfield County’s school district superintendent has joined other Pee Dee officials to demand higher educational standards for South Carolina students.

 Laurens 55 Board of Trustees Whereas, the Laurens County School District No. 55 Board of Trustees believes that the General Assembly of South Carolina should provide for the maintenance and support of a system of free public schools; and Whereas, the Laurens County School District No. 55 Board of Trustees believes that public institutions of learning should privide a high quality education to all students allowing each student to reach his highest potential; and Whereas, the Laurens County School District No. 55 Board of Trustees supports an amendment to replace the words, "a minimally adequate education" with the words, "high quality education" in the South Carolina Constitution. |

Tom Truitt is the former superintendent of Florence District One, which was one of the 36 school districts to file suit against the state in Abbeville v. South Carolina.  Tom Truitt "My name is Tom Truitt, and I’m here to speak in favor of an amendment to the education clause of our state constitution. I am a retired educator who served as superintendent of Florence School District One from 1987 to 1998 and as the executive director of the Pee Dee Education Center from 1998 until 2005. I was one of the 18 superintendents who initiated the suit against the state that is known as Abbeville v. South Carolina. I have been involved in that suit since its filing in November 1993, nearly 15 years ago. |
