| State Teacher Leaders Support Rex's call for funding reform |
![]() Dear Colleagues and Friends: South Carolina's State Teachers of the Year get to travel throughout the state to visit schools in both rural and urban areas. We represent more than 50,000 educators by being their eyes and ears, and our experiences have given us a real-world view of education in the Palmetto State. Unequivocally, we can say that reforming public education funding is badly needed. That's why we support State Superintendent of Education Jim Rex's call for more student-centered funding, teacher pay reform, and a new transparent system for raising funds for public schools. Our state leaders in the General Assembly need to hear from each of us on this and all other education issues. Why? Because every day we are on the front lines - in classrooms and in leadership positions - teaching, motivating, and challenging South Carolina students to establish a strong foundation for life-long learning and successful futures. We support abandoning the disappointing Constitutional standard of "minimally adequate" and replacing it with the self-fulfilling phrase "high quality education" in our State's Constitution. As educators, we know when standards are high, students rise to the challenge. It's time to set our sights higher. Please join us as we strive to reach the goal of one million names on the Goodbye Minimally Adequate petition. Please sign the petition; then, ask 10 friends and colleagues who also believe that South Carolina students deserve a high quality education to sign. Also, don't forget to let your legislators know that you appreciate their efforts on behalf of South Carolina's children.
