The Greenville News Readers' letters: November 5, 2008 Our schools need higher standards Dangerously outdated electrical systems, roofs that leak, and sewage that backs up into the halls. These are the shameful conditions of some of the South Carolina's rural schools. It is these conditions, depicted so poignantly in the 2005 documentary "Corridor of Shame," that I am writing about today. These conditions are unacceptable and more people need to be aware of the economic injustices within South Carolina's public school system. I am a freshman at Clemson University and I would like to see South Carolina's rural schools provided with more financial resources than they currently have. As a college student, I recognize the value of a college education. The global economy will require that every high school student in South Carolina is educated enough to succeed in college and/or the job market. Unfortunately, the students who graduate from schools along the I-95 corridor will probably not have the background to successfully handle the academic rigor required by higher education or the competitive job market. It is important to set a higher standard of expectations of South Carolina's public education system. Tyler Smith, Clemson |
